Foliage from a Mountaintop
Pack your hiking boots for a mountaintop adventure in the Lake Sunapee region.
First, the thrill of a summit - Mount Kearsarge, the highest point in Merrimack County, with an open summit offering spectacular views. Head to Rollins State Park in Warner for a family-friendly trail, which is just a half mile from picnic area to summit, though the climb gets steep in parts. If you want to work for your view, take a 1.5-mile hike up the other side of the mountain starting at Winslow State Park in Wilmot.
For a longer hike, try Bog Mountain along Trail #7 of the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway. The SRK Greenway stretches for 75 miles, but this morning you'll just be going from Wilmot Center to the Bog Mountain summit and back again, for a total of 5 miles. The trail passes a peaceful woodland pool, climbs through a magnificent oak forest and along a rocky ridge with many outlooks before reaching the bald summit for a rewarding view. (View Maps.)
Still glowing from your morning's hike, head to one of several wonderful restaurants for lunch. Kearsarge hikers may prefer the Flying Goose Brew Pub & Grille with its magnificent view of the mountain you just climbed. The pub also offers a low-key brewery tour.
Take the afternoon to explore the Philbrick/Cricenti Bog or the Esther Currier Wildlife Management Area, both in New London and both with abundant flora and fauna. Maps of the self-guided nature & walking trails can be found at the trail heads.
When you're done, reward yourself with something cold and sweet at Arctic Dreams or at MacKenna's Restaurant, or maybe a hot cup of coffee from Jack's of New London.
Can't do it all in one day? Stay a while longer at one
of the inns, bed & breakfasts or cottages in the area.
