For more than a century, visitors have been awed by our natural wonders...

A Summer haven, way back when...
At the turn of the century, affluent city-dwellers packed up their households and spent the entire summer here because of its spectacular scenery, pristine lakes and abundant recreational opportunities.

A tradition of wholesome family fun...
More came when railroads eased the journey. Families from Boston, New York, and Washington, DC, boarded at the large hotels, village inns and farmhouses. Steamboats ferried them to the round of picnics, band concerts, theatrical performances and outdoor activities. The fresh country air and wholesome environment worked wonders for growing children and weary adults alike.

Then as now, golf's the game...
Golf was a popular summer pastime with our earliest visitors. The first local courses were built in the 1920's. By the '60's, several first-rate, championship golf courses graced our valleys, and tournaments were scheduled from May through the magnificent foliage season in October.

Autos end a romantic era...
As the years went by, summer residents were more often ensconced in their own cottages, as one by one, the grand old hotels succumbed to fire or were torn down. Automobiles and improved roads made the steamboats obsolete; they too disappeared.

Skiing brings winter visitors...
During the '60's, second and third generations of these vacationing families began to winterize their summer cottages or build substantial year-round homes. Skiing had become a national passion, and nearby Mt. Sunapee offered fine alpine facilities within a few hours by train or car from Boston or Hartford.

Some visitors stayed...
Later, many retired here to take full-time advantage of what had become a four-season playground. Increased opportunities for diversified employment began to attract younger families; the entrepreneurial spirit flourished as well.

While some things change...
Our towns have evolved, too, while carefully preserving our historic rural heritage. New homes, modern schools and medical facilities have enhanced our way of life. Small businesses have blossomed along our picturesque old main streets and around our lakeside harbors... attractive shops... fine restaurants and cafes... banks... real estate offices, and a full spectrum of professional services.

Some things stay the same...
Today, miraculously, the peaceful, unspoiled qualities that captivated our first visitors remain.... The bracing, restorative environment and charming village life are still here.

But, now there's so much more!
For more than a century, visitors have been awed by our natural wonders. Come visit this perfect year-round vacation spot soon.
